Vinyl or Power Coated Chain Link Fence January 21, 2025 Comments: 0
We have talked about ways to decorate your chain link fence to make it a bit more aesthetic, and gain some functionality. Some additional benefits can be gained from coating your chain link fence in vinyl, or by powder coating it. This fence type can also be purchased in the beginning with the desired coating.
What Are These Coatings?
Powder coating involves a dry powder that is sprayed onto an electrostatically charged surface featuring an epoxy base coat, in this case chain link fence wire. Afterwards the surface is heated to bake the coating with any added coloration to it.
Vinyl coating is a plastic coating that is applied to the wire of the chain link fence to preserve it from the elements.
What This Means For Your Fence
Vinyl Coating
For vinyl coatings, there are different ways the coatings are applied. Some are pulled over the wire like a sock, and will easily tear off and peal. This vinyl is thicker, but thickness does not always equal strength.
The next grade up is typically used in commercial situations and is glued to the extruded wire and less likely to peal or tear from the wire of the chain link fence.
The third has the thinnest coating, but offers the greatest resistance to pealing and tearing as the vinyl coating is fused to the steel during production. This is stronger still over the version with the adhesive.
Since these coatings are different, the way to ensure you get the chain link fence to your specifications, is to specify the type of coating you want, and make sure that the gauge of wire is specified. These gauges range from 6 gauge to 11.5 gauge with 9 being the most common for commercial and residential, and 9 gauge wire used almost solely for residential areas.
Powder Coating
Powder coating is slightly more expensive however it is stronger and offers superior durability. This coating offers a longer life span due to the fact that it does not peel, offering superior rust prevention and protection from the elements. Powder coated fences are usually used in industrial and commercial settings and is overkill for most residential settings.
