In short, to have a contractor come in and install a fence,  the national average is $3,440 on the low end.

However, there are several factors, from height to materials, that can increase or decrease your total residential fence cost. At Pittsburgh Fence Company, we’ve put together some average costs to give you a better idea of budgeting for your next fence.

What is the cost of a Fence?

A good estimated price range for a fence, taking fencing company’s around the country, is $1,330-$5,550, equaling $8- $46 per linear foot of fencing. This estimate includes the material cost and labor cost for professional fence installation and has an average cost of $27 per linear foot.

While this is just an estimate, the total cost of your fence will depend on the style of fence and the material you choose. Factors such as larger yards, high-end materials, taller fences in the 8-foot range, and fence installation on uneven terrain can cost up to $10,000. If you opt for cheaper materials, have a smaller yard, and go with a bid from a general handyman, you could see a lesser number, but at what will the long-term cost be of this decision?

Let’s look at how different factors come into play when budgeting for your new fence.

How Does Size of The Fence Affect Its Cost?

Size is a major factor when it comes to the cost of fencing. The larger the area you need to fence in, the higher the price. This is because larger areas require more materials and hours to complete the fence installation project.
Using the national average cost we discussed earlier in the article of $27 per linear foot, you can estimate the cost of your fencing project.

Keep in mind that there are a variety of fencing materials, from chain link to vinyl and more. You could pay as low as $8 per linear foot for some materials and $46 per linear foot for others.

For example, a small backyard measuring 500 square feet may cost around $1,800 to install, depending on the company you work with. For a larger yard at 2,000 square feet, you can expect to pay around $3,600 for a fence installation.

What Else Can Affect the Cost of Fencing?

Regarding fencing costs, style, materials, and height also affect the price you pay for your fencing.

Fencing Style Cost Per Foot

There are a variety of fencing styles to suit your aesthetic needs. Certain styles require specific skills to install or use more material, which can raise the price of your fence installation. Common fence styles and their approximate costs include:

•         Rail fence $12 – $25 per linear foot
•         Privacy fence  $15 – $35 per linear foot
•         Board on board fence $15 – $25 per linear foot
•         Picket fence $18-$33 per linear foot

Fence Material Cost Per Foot

Just as there are many fence styles, there are also a variety of materials to choose from when installing a fence.

Simple wire fencing can cost anywhere from $1 to $4 per linear foot with professional installation.

Chain link fencing costs around $12 to $33 per linear foot, whereas vinyl fencing is around $17 to $38 per linear foot.

Composite fencing is typically on the higher end at $28-$58 per linear foot.

Wooden fencing is around $14 – $31 per foot installed. This cost can vary based on the type of wood. This is an excellent option if you are looking for something in the middle cost-wise.

Higher-end fencing such as wrought iron fencing can cost anywhere from $28 to $56 per linear square foot.

How Fence Height Effects It’s Cost

A standard residential fence is typically six feet tall, but you can opt for higher or lower fences.

Eight feet fencing is another popular option on the higher end. We also see homeowners have 4 feet decorative fences installed in the front of their homes. To determine the impact of the height of your fence on the cost, we recommend taking the pricing we’ve given so far and adding an extra 25% to 35% to your budget if you plan on having an 8-foot fence installed.
