What Fencing is Best for a Dog?

Westie Dog in Fenced yard
As a pet owner, finding the perfect fence to keep our four-legged friends active and safe is extremely important.  You want to make sure that the fence is strong and sturdy enough to keep your dog contained, but that it doesn’t detract from your home.  At Pittsburgh Fence Co, Inc., we offer a variety of materials for your Pittsburgh fence installation.

While searching for the perfect dog fence, consider the following items:
  • Size of area that you plan to fence in
  • Size of your dog—will your dog be able to climb over or crawl under a fence?
In addition to your budget, these two factors will guide your decision-making.  Let’s look into the options that are available.

Wooden Fences

One of the best choices for dog fencing is a wooden fence, especially if your excitable dog loves to bark or growl at every person or animal that passes by their sight. Opt for a solid wood fence rather than a slatted fence because it will block what is on the outside, which will hopefully limit the amount of barking and growling. Also, stay away from picket fences as they tend to be smaller and dogs can easily use the slats for climbing.  And depending on the size of your dog, choose an appropriate fence height so it cannot be easily jumped over.
When it comes to curb appeal, wooden fences provide many options to complement your house. There is a variety of paint and stain colors available to match your home.  Wooden fences are a cost-effective option that can last several years with proper care, but they do require more maintenance than other materials.

Chain Link Fences

Chain link fences are popular choices for homeowners because of their affordability, durability and easy maintenance.  They may not be the most attractive option, but they hold up well and provide security.  At most consumer retail locations, the standard height for chain link fences is 6’, but you can find 8’, 10’ and 12’ fences through fence supply companies.  Obviously, if your dog is a climber, you will want to go with a taller fence.  Also, depending if your dog is the type that can chew through wires, you may want to customize the gauge thickness of the wires.
Another thing to consider before investing in a chain link fence is the lack of privacy provided with this see-through option.  Not only will outsiders be able to see in, but your dog will bark at every bird, squirrel and person that it can see, but not reach.

Vinyl Fences

Vinyl fences tend to be more expensive than other fencing materials, but they are several times stronger than wood and last a long time. Their performance and durability justify their cost.  Resistant to rot and corrosion, vinyl requires little maintenance.  Additionally, vinyl fences are easy to clean, which comes in handy with dogs’ noses and paws always rubbing against the surface.  A little soap and water will have your fence looking brand new in no time.
Vinyl also tends to be more flexible than wood, which is advantageous with larger breeds of dogs that are extremely active in their confined space.
