Which Side of the Fence Am I Responsible for Maintaining?

Fencing boundary issues are a common occurrence between neighbors and have been since fencing was installed between homes. In some cases, it can be difficult to determine whether the fences that split the land into different sections belong to one parcel or the other.

When each property owner has a fence, it can be easy to determine which parcel they are responsible for, whereas, with a single fence, it can make the process more difficult.

Check the Conveyance Deed of the Home

If you purchased the home with the fence already present, the former owner should have included the information about fence ownership in the deed.

In many cases, you will be responsible for the fence at the left or the right of your land. You will need to check the conveyance deed to avoid any issues.

When checking the conveyancing deed, ownership is indicated with a T, marking one side of the boundary. If there is an H rather than a T, the boundary is shared by both parties.

If there is a boundary shared by both parties, this is called a party fence, so you will need to work with your neighbor about how to deal with the maintenance of the fence. If you want to have total ownership of the fence, you could follow the legal process to buy out your neighbor’s half of the fence.

The Difference Between Safety Fences and Security Fences

With a variety of different fencing options out there, you may be wondering how they differ from each other. Safety fencing and security fencing may sound like the same thing, but they each serve different purposes.

What is Safety Fencing?

Safety fencing works more like a guardrail, such as temporary fencing for construction sites, etc. It is mostly used in applications where people need to be protected from heavy machinery.
Before you implement a safety fencing system, there are a variety of factors you should consider, including but not limited to:

The Area That You Need to Fence In

Before you can select safety fencing, you need to determine the size of the area that surrounds the hazards you are trying to protect people from. Once you have these dimensions, you can select the fencing that will best fit the area. Panels for safety fencing are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to best fit your desired area.

How High The Fence Needs to Be

Having the correct height fence will help prevent injuries that can occur if someone were to reach over the fence. You will need to have safety distances taken into consideration that will prevent upper and lower limbs from entering hazardous areas. By taking height into consideration, we can help you find a fencing system that will keep your workers and operators safe.

Longevity of the Fencing System

Safety fencing needs to be strong enough to handle unexpected collisions from carts, personnel, and machinery. They should also be able to last in an industrial environment without becoming degraded.

What is Security Fencing?

Security fencing is more like password-protected entry or measures such as tall fencing that will deter people from seeing in or getting in. Adding security fencing around the perimeter of your yard can provide you with a variety of benefits, including:

Discouraging break-ins

Installing a tall fence can help deter burglars from stealing anything in your backyard and can make it harder for them to access your home to break-in.

Keeps Pets and Children Safe

With a security fence, you can create a safe enclosed area that will prevent children and pets from running away or out onto the street.

Adds Privacy to Your Backyard

A tall security fence allows you to create a private outdoor space you can enjoy, free from the prying eyes of nosy neighbors.

Keep Out Unwanted Animals

In addition to keeping your animals in, you can also keep dangerous animals out of your fenced-in area that could harm your pets or damage your landscaping.

Wood and wrought iron fencing are popular choices for security fencing. Both materials can be customized to meet your style and will provide you with a durable and reliable fence.
